FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, KINDRED HEALTHCARE NAMED ONE OF KENTUCKY’S BEST PLACES TO WORK

Louisville, KY (April 15, 2008) – Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the “Company”) (NYSE:KND) today announced that its support center was named one of the Top 25 Best Places to Work in Kentucky among companies of 250 employees or greater. This is the second year in a row the Company received the designation.

Kindred’s support center has approximately 1,000 employees who provide information technology, accounts payable, payroll, finance, human resources and other support services for the Company’s 630 sites of service.

The announcement was made by The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management State Council in conjunction with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. Winners were selected from two categories, featuring small/medium-sized companies of 25 to 249 employees and large-sized companies consisting of 250 employees or greater. The selection process is based on an assessment of the company’s employee policies and procedures and the results of an internal employee survey.

The Best Places to Work in Kentucky initiative is similar to the Fortune magazine list ranking the “100 Best Companies to Work for in America.” In addition to the positive effect the award has on their employee relations and recruitment, the driving force for companies to join in this program is the remarkable effect that workplace improvements can have on their bottom lines.

“I am pleased our employees have selected Kindred again for this honor,” said Paul J. Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. “The link between taking care of our people and quality and profitability has never been clearer. I think the fact that our employees are proud to work for us says something about our success as a company.”
