KINDRED HEALTHCARE OPENS HOSPITAL IN OCALA, FLORIDA, AND ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR NEW HOSPITAL IN CLEVELAND, OHIO

Louisville, KY (November 16, 2005) – Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the “Company”) (NYSE: KND) today announced the opening of Kindred Hospital Ocala in Ocala, Florida, and announced plans to open a freestanding hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

Kindred Hospital Ocala is a 31-bed hospital-in-hospital (“HIH”) located within Munroe Regional Medical Center.

The Company is planning a 72-bed freestanding long-term acute care hospital with a co-located 40-bed subacute unit in Cleveland. The Company will lease the facility from the Benjamin Rose Institute, a non-profit health and social service agency that helps older people age with dignity. The hospital is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2006 after completion of renovations and the receipt of certain regulatory approvals. The Company currently operates a HIH in Cleveland under the name Kindred Hospital - Cleveland.
